Many people are extremely happy when the old classics are available for tablets and smartphones. The game “Snake” is loaded onto the latest smartphone, just because it was once played not only on the Nokia, but also on the ancient computer. Overall, the development of computer games is impressive. While little progress was made in the beginning – especially from today’s perspective – the possibilities and developers have outperformed themselves every day for the past twenty years. For example, today you can play anywhere, which also benefits slots and online casinos. This article takes a look at the beginnings, classics and current events.

The beginnings of the computer game naturally required the computer itself. The beginnings also lie between 1946 and 1979, at which time computers were neither known nor suitable for everyday use. After all, there were just 7 million televisions in Germany in 1964 – most people didn’t even dare to dream of a computer. Nevertheless, they did exist and there were even first »computer games«:
First game – this was developed in 1946 for a tube calculator. Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr. and Estle Ray Mann patented it. Presentation – a mathematical NIM game was presented on a NIMROD computer in 1951. A tic-tac-toe game followed a year later.
Tennis for Two – physicist William Higinbotham constructed this game on an analog computer and an oscillograph. However, this game is considered more of a video game.
The basis for computer game development was actually television. Because from the beginning of the 70s, television technology became significantly cheaper due to mass production, so that slot machines could be developed from it. In general, this development can be equated with the development of video games again, but not only computer specialists are involved in it, the operating system of the machines is also reminiscent of computers. Some highlights:
Pong – it was the first truly successful game, and it was developed by the Atari founder. The game was also found in the entrance areas of supermarkets, cinemas or canteens. A game back then cost a mark.
Game consoles – the more video games have been developed, the more work has been done on slot machines for the home. It is interesting that the public gambling halls were pushed into the shade by this train.
Breakthrough – this came in 1979 when the game Space Invaders, which was actually only found in arcades, was mass-produced for the home console.
Pixelaliens of the DOS game Space Invaders
With the Pixelaliens from Space Invaders, the leap from slot machines to home consoles was achieved.
The time of great ascent
Computer game history could take a really big step when the PC was introduced. Nevertheless, there were two types of games, namely console and computer games:
Computer games – they were primarily made for the C64 in the early days. There was a general problem that the computers were designed for real work and real applications, had only monochrome graphics and also offered poor sound. In 1984 there were real improvements with the EGA graphics and their sixteen colors. Shortly afterwards sound cards came out.
Video games – there was a real breakdown here in 1983. Revenue fell from $ 3 billion to $ 100 million within a year. This was not least due to the market deluge due to bad games, unrealistic profit expectations and the ever smaller price difference between console and PC, whereby the PC gained massive performance.
Monkey Island – as a pirate, players can play through the game. The game works through puzzles.
Civilization – the player shapes civilization over millennia. The game still counts as the origin of global strategy games.
Nevertheless, there was a new division that first started in Japan. Home computers were not considered popular here anyway, so Nintendo was able to assert itself and assert itself with the first consoles. When the company modified the system and turned west, the breakthrough was practically perfect. However, the whole industry really took off in the 90s:
Super Nintendo System – the 16-bit console had a breakthrough in Europe in the first half of the decade. Everyone knows some games today: Super Mario.
SEGA Mega Drive – they also managed to assert themselves. With S
