About Egg Flip

Egg Flip is a board game for two played on a nest of eight squares by eight: you with Rex’s green eggs, the computer with Mo’s orange ones. Lay an egg so that a straight line of orange eggs — across, up and down, or diagonally — is trapped between it and another green egg, and every trapped egg flips to green. A move has to flip at least one egg; if you have none, you pass. When neither side can move, the side with more eggs wins.

It is a game of a few minutes and a lifetime of tactics: corners can never be flipped back, and the squares beside them are a gift to the other side. Play the computer at Easy, Medium or Hard. A win against Medium scores the number of eggs you won by and goes on the weekly leaderboard, which resets every Monday at 00:00 UTC.

How to play

  1. Pick a level — Medium is the ranked one — and press Start. You play green and move first.
  2. The squares where you can lay an egg are marked. Tap one: every orange line it traps flips to green.
  3. The computer then plays orange. If you have no move, the computer moves again.
  4. The game ends when neither side can move. The side with more eggs wins.
  5. A win at Medium scores the number of eggs you won by. Sign in to put it on the weekly board.

Tips

  • Corners can never be flipped. Take them when you can, and avoid the squares right next to an empty corner.
  • Early on, fewer eggs is often better: it leaves the computer fewer moves and you more.
  • Edges are steadier than the middle, but an edge egg next to an empty corner can still be trapped.
  • Count the computer’s replies before you move: a move that leaves it only bad squares is worth more than a big flip.
  • The last few moves decide most games — save your safe moves for the end.

Questions players ask

How is a win scored?

By how many eggs you won by: your green eggs minus the computer’s orange ones when the game ends. Only wins against Medium go on the board.

When does the leaderboard reset?

Every Monday at 00:00 UTC. The final standings are kept: the top three of each week receive an honour on their profile, and your best never resets.

Does the computer cheat?

No. It sees only the board, as you do, and our server checks its moves by the same rules as yours. Easy now and then plays a move at random; Hard looks furthest ahead.

Do I need an account to play?

No. Press Start and you play straight away under a guest name. Sign in with an account you already have to put your wins on the weekly leaderboard.
